Novak Djokovic secured a controversial path to his seventh China Open final after Daniil Medvedev was disqualified mid-match. The incident occurred when Medvedev struck a ball into the crowd during a service game, forcing umpire Mohamed Lahyani to issue the default.
Despite Medvedev’s strong performance in a grueling two-hour match, the moment overshadowed his efforts, leaving both players seemingly accepting of the outcome. Djokovic, now 39 years and four months old, also made history by becoming the oldest player to reach an ATP 500 final, surpassing Roger Federer’s previous record set in 2019 at Basel.
The victory follows Djokovic’s quarterfinal win over Alexander Zverev the day prior, continuing his dominant form in the tournament.
