Barbara Guarischi (SD Worx-Protime) faced a significant setback during the opening stage of the Eneco Tour after being relegated for her aggressive sprint tactics. The Italian rider was accused of deliberately pushing Charlotte Kool (Fenix-Premier Tech) into the barriers as they battled for the stage win in Ede.
Kool, a favorite for the flat stage, lost momentum after being forced off course and ultimately finished behind Sandrine Tas (Lotto Intermarché), who claimed the victory. Kool expressed frustration over the incident, calling it unsportsmanlike and suggesting Guarischi’s actions were intentional, though the Italian rider has not yet responded publicly.
The race officials later confirmed Guarischi’s relegation, dropping her to 85th place in the stage results, while Nicola Steigenga moved up to third. The decision aligns with UCI regulations prohibiting riders from obstructing others during sprints by deviating from their chosen lane.
