Former world boxing champion Joe Cordina has been acquitted of assault charges following a high-profile incident outside a Cardiff petrol station in February. The 34-year-old faced allegations after a confrontation with Jamie O’Brien, which was captured on CCTV and later shared online, escalating into a physical altercation.
District Judge Charlotte Murphy ruled that Cordina’s single punch in response to O’Brien’s shoulder barge was justified self-defense, noting the split-second nature of the encounter. The ruling came after O’Brien had already pleaded guilty to his own assault charge in the same incident.
Cordina’s legal troubles stemmed from the altercation, which had previously led to his denial of entry to the U.S. for a scheduled WBO lightweight title fight.
The case hinged on whether Cordina’s reaction was proportionate, with the judge concluding it was a controlled response under pressure.
