
Top seed Carlos Alcaraz advanced to the third round at the Japan Open on Saturday after defeating Matteo Arnaldi in straight sets, 7-6 (6), 6-1. The victory marks another step in his recovery following a four-month absence caused by a wrist injury.
Previously, Alcaraz competed in the Laver Cup, securing a singles victory against Taylor Fritz to help Team Europe secure the championship, and also reached the U.S. Open quarterfinals before falling to Ben Shelton.
Next up in the quarterfinals, Alcaraz will face Denis Shapovalov, who earned his spot by overcoming Alejandro Tabilo 7-5, 3-6, 6-4 in their respective second-round contest.
