The BCCI’s selection committee is finalizing its fifth member to replace Ajit Agarkar, with the decision expected soon after interviews wrapped Thursday. Among the candidates are former Mumbai cricketers Ramesh Powar and Salil Ankola, both with limited international experience.
Notably, the committee probed their views on Rohit Sharma’s future in ODIs, a topic that became contentious under Agarkar’s tenure, particularly regarding his leadership for the 2027 World Cup. The selectors’ recent omission of Yashasvi Jaiswal from the New Zealand ODI series—despite Shubman Gill’s absence—further signals a shift in strategy, potentially prioritizing Rohit’s role in the upcoming tournament.
Candidates were also questioned on Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s exclusion from the T20I team and hypothetical scenarios involving Gill’s injury, testing their tactical approaches. With Pragyan Ojha set to assume full-time chief selector duties, the panel’s composition will determine India’s path to retaining its white-ball dominance, having won three ICC trophies under Agarkar’s leadership in 2024 and 2025.
