India Test captain Shubman Gill is taking an extraordinary step to prepare for the upcoming series against New Zealand by personally funding a team of four to five net bowlers to accompany him on the tour. This move marks a rare instance of an Indian cricketer arranging and covering the expenses for dedicated support staff, typically provided by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).
Gill’s decision comes as he balances his commitments, skipping the India A Tests against New Zealand A to focus on his ODI schedule and red-ball preparations, with an early departure to New Zealand planned for October 23 or 24 to aid acclimatization and training. His upcoming Ranji Trophy match against Chhattisgarh, starting October 18, will also serve as a crucial opportunity for match practice before the Test series begins.
Gill, who scored 754 runs during India’s recent five-Test series in England, faces a demanding challenge in New Zealand, where conditions are expected to test his technique and leadership skills.
