‘We want batters till No. 8’: Chahal reveals Rohit Sharma’s message before WC snub

Yuzvendra Chahal has opened up about missing out on selection for the 15-member squad for the 2023 World Cup, revealing the direct conversation he had with then-captain Rohit Sharma regarding the decision. Speaking with Aakash Chopra, Chahal explained the reasoning shared by the team management that ultimately left the leg-spinner out of the tournament plans.

According to Chahal, Rohit Sharma personally explained the strategy behind the squad composition. The leadership wanted to strengthen the team's batting depth and keep the option open for an additional fast bowler, leaving little room for Chahal in the team's plans.

Recalling the interaction, Chahal said, In 2023, when I went to play County, Rohit had told me that we want batters till number eight, so we were going with that. Chahal also stated that Rohit Sharma told him clearly that they were also looking for an extra fast bowler for the World Cup.

Reflecting on how the omission affected him, Chahal stated, After the World Cup, I just stopped thinking about selection. He shifted his focus ahead of the 2024 Indian Premier League season.

Regarding the tournament, Chahal said, In the IPL 2024, I just came to enjoy and did not put extra pressure on myself. Following his performances that season, Chahal stated about his performance in the 2024 IPL, That season, I did well, and Rohit told me he wanted me and we would see in the selection meeting.

Chahal also reflected on his past experiences with World Cup squads. Comparing different tournaments, Chahal stated, I felt worse in 2021 because I was not there at all.

He stated, In 2022, at least I was in the team. Discussing his time on the bench during events where he was selected, Chahal remarked, Sometimes you also know the combination may not work.

So I did not think a lot. But you always feel that you should have at least played one World Cup game.

He added, Rohit had told me that I would play only if a particular combination worked. So at least I had the clarity.
