The Kansas City Chiefs’ offseason overhaul on defense is showing early promise, though questions remain about whether the team has fully replaced its departed stars. After losing key defensive players like Trent McDuffie, Jaylen Watson, and Bryan Cook, the Chiefs turned to a mix of youth and experience, including first-round cornerback Mansoor Delane, veteran safety Alohi Gilman, and the elevated role of second-year cornerback Nohl Williams.
Delane, the sixth overall pick, has been a standout with an interception against the Denver Broncos and 20 combined tackles across three games, despite a shoulder injury sidelining him briefly. His aggressive tackling—including 10 combined stops in each of the games against the Miami Dolphins and Las Vegas Raiders—has been a bright spot, while Williams has also contributed with 15 combined tackles, four passes defended, and a sack, showing growth in his expanded role.
Gilman has added stability with 17 combined tackles and a pass breakup, though the safety rotation remains a work in progress with Chamarri Conner’s debut against Las Vegas adding another variable. On the defensive line, the Chiefs addressed losses like Charles Omenihu and Mike Danna by bringing in Khyiris Tong, but the front remains unproven as the team evaluates whether its offseason moves will pay off long-term.
Four games in, the early returns are encouraging but not yet definitive.
