Why higher-lofted fairway woods are losing their stigma

October 8, 2026

The stigma around high-lofted fairway woods like the 5-, 7-, and 9-woods is fading as golfers prioritize performance over tradition. Srixon’s product manager Joe Miller notes that players like former world No.

1 Vijay Singh embraced these clubs for their precision on tight greens, using them effectively in major tournaments. Singh, who won the 2004 PGA Championship at Whistling Straits, cited the need for controlled descent on fast greens as his reason for carrying a high-lofted fairway wood.

Miller also suggests that peer pressure has historically influenced club choices, but as top pros increasingly rely on fairway woods—replacing long irons like the 3-, 4-, and 5-irons—traditionalists may soon follow suit.
