Alex Eala loses her doubles match at the Wuhan Open leaving her with important decision to make

October 13, 2026

Alex Eala’s early exit at the Wuhan Open doubles tournament has left her facing a critical crossroads in her season. Partnering with Zeynep Sonmez, the Filipino star lost 2-6, 3-6 to Dayana Yastremska and Anhelina Kalinina in the first round, marking her second consecutive defeat in Wuhan after falling in singles to Shi Han.

The back-to-back losses come amid a grueling Asian swing, where Eala has competed in the Singapore Tennis Open, the Asian Games, and now Wuhan—an intense schedule that appears to be weighing on her performance. Since the US Open, her singles record stands at 2-3, with notable struggles including a second-round loss in Singapore and a semifinal defeat at the Asian Games to Wang Xiyu.

Though she remains 19th in the WTA singles rankings—just one spot off her career high—her recent form suggests she may need to reassess her commitments, particularly with three more events looming in Ningbo, Tokyo, and Hong Kong. With her doubles ranking at 127th and no immediate pressure in that discipline, the focus now shifts to whether Eala can push through this slump or if a strategic break is necessary to regain her rhythm before the season’s end.
