Ajit Agarkar’s four-year tenure as India’s chief cricket selector concluded Tuesday after the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) opened applications for a single vacancy on the men’s selection committee. Agarkar, who led the panel since 2023, oversaw India’s triumph in the 2024 T20 World Cup and guided the team to finals in the 2023 ODI World Cup and the 2025 Champions Trophy, while also securing qualification for the 2026 T20 World Cup.
His final selection duties included naming squads for the recent ODIs and T20Is against the West Indies, though his exit followed speculation—later dismissed by BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia—that Rohit Sharma’s international career might be nearing its end under his leadership. With Agarkar stepping down without seeking an extension, former India spinner Pragyan Ojha will serve as interim chief selector for upcoming series against New Zealand across all formats, pending the BCCI’s appointment of a permanent replacement.
The new selector will be tasked with long-term squad planning, talent identification, and bench-strength development, with eligibility requiring either seven Test caps, 30 first-class matches, or 10 ODIs plus 20 first-class appearances—all while having retired from cricket for at least five years.
