The San Francisco 49ers’ narrow 32–29 victory over the Seattle Seahawks last weekend included a controversial moment that resurfaced after the game. Safety Malik Mustapha was fined $6,998 for an uncalled hit on a defenseless receiver during Seattle’s final drive, a play that could have altered the outcome.
With 1:13 left and the Seahawks threatening a game-tying field goal, Jaxon Smith-Njigba caught a 35-yard pass to set up a first-and-10 at midfield. On the next play, Mustapha’s hard hit dislodged the ball, forcing Seattle into three straight incompletions and a turnover on downs.
The NFL later ruled the hit illegal, though no penalty was flagged on the field. Had it been called, Seattle might have faced a far more manageable fourth-down conversion attempt.
The 49ers now stand at 5–0, while the Seahawks drop to 3–3 following their loss to the Denver Broncos earlier this week.
