The Pittsburgh Steelers enter their Week 6 road trip to Tampa Bay with a critical question mark at wide receiver, as injuries have decimated their depth. Michael Pittman Jr., the team’s prized offseason acquisition from the Colts, was placed on injured reserve with a foot injury, while Roman Wilson and Ben Skowronek were ruled out for the game.
That leaves only DK Metcalf as the proven option, with rookie Germie Bernard and fringe NFL talent like Kaden Wetjen—who joined the roster primarily for his kick returns—filling out the rest of the group. The Steelers will likely need contributions from practice squad receivers Brandon Smith and Brandon Johnson to provide any meaningful separation for quarterback Aaron Rodgers, who has thrown at least three touchdowns in each of his last three starts.
Meanwhile, the offense’s supporting cast, including running back Jaylen Warren (now third in the NFL in scrimmage yards over the past three games), will need to step up without a fully healthy receiving corps.
Defensively, the Steelers face challenges beyond the wide receiver position. The pass rush has been stagnant, with T.J.
Watt managing just one sack over the last three games and Nick Herbig—despite a $100 million contract extension—still without a sack on the season. The secondary is also dealing with the loss of cornerback Joey Porter Jr.
and injuries to veterans Jalen Ramsey and Jamel Dean. On the bright side, the team added veteran Elandon Roberts to the practice squad, giving defensive coordinator Patrick Graham an experienced option at middle linebacker for a third time this season.
