New York Liberty supporters reacted with intense skepticism after a local media figure suggested trading star guard Sabrina Ionescu for DiJonai Carrington. The proposal, put forward by Dexter Henry of the Liberty Lately podcast, argued that Carrington’s defensive skills and toughness would complement Pauline Astier in the backcourt.
However, fans rejected the idea, noting that Carrington has changed teams four times since 2024 and lacks consistent offensive reliability, whereas Ionescu remains a high-value asset despite recent underwhelming seasons. Most observers believe any deal involving Ionescu should yield at least an All-Star caliber player in return.
Separately, Liberty beat reporter Madeline Kenney stated that only Breanna Stewart should feel secure in her position heading into the offseason. Speaking on the WNBA on CLNS podcast, Kenney highlighted the team’s eighth-place finish with a 26-18 record and noted that Ionescu missed 13 games while averaging 14.6 points per game.
Kenney suggested that the franchise, now under its third coach in three years, may need to prioritize roster overhauls over further coaching changes to become a true championship contender.
