Ravichandran Ashwin has publicly defended Sanju Samson following a challenging T20I series in New Zealand where the batter recorded scores of 67, 14, 18, 4, and 4. After a social media user criticized Samson's performance, Ashwin retorted that while Samson remains his preferred choice, the player has become an obsession for his detractors.
This discourse follows calls from some fans to replace the veteran with 15-year-old newcomer Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, who posted scores of 4 and 45 during his two appearances.
Despite the individual struggles, India secured a 3-2 series victory under the guidance of head coach Gautam Gambhir. Gambhir praised the squad for their resilience in overcoming jet lag and limited preparation time to win the first three matches.
The coach emphasized that the majority of the roster was experiencing New Zealand conditions for the first time.
