Super Bowl champion Russell Wilson and Pro Bowler Kyle Long recently appeared on the CBS Sports program Set Hut to evaluate the acquisition of J.J. McCarthy by New York.
The roster move follows a season-ending knee injury sustained by starting quarterback Jaxson Dart that required surgical intervention. Wilson characterized the trade as an intriguing opportunity for McCarthy to rejuvenate his professional career while operating behind veteran Jameis Winston.
Long emphasized that the organization must communicate clearly regarding the depth chart, noting that Winston holds the starting role until Dart recovers.
During his collegiate career, McCarthy secured a championship under the guidance of Jim Harbaugh at Michigan, prompting Wilson to endorse the fit with the head coach. McCarthy missed his entire rookie season due to a knee injury, and subsequent physical setbacks including a high ankle sprain, a concussion, and a hand injury disrupted his playing time in Minnesota.
Across ten games, he accumulated a 6-4 record, completing 57.6 percent of his pass attempts for 1,632 yards, eleven touchdowns, and twelve interceptions before losing the starting job to Kyler Murray in 2026.
