The Boston Celtics suffered a 121-113 loss to the Detroit Pistons in their season opener on Tuesday, after blowing a 22-point lead early in the third quarter. Despite Paul George's 38 points on 12-of-21 shooting, including seven 3-pointers, the Celtics were outscored 76-55 in the second half.
A 23-0 run by Detroit, led by Duncan Robinson's 21 points and five 3-pointers, erased the lead and secured the victory.
Jayson Tatum struggled, scoring 13 points on 6-of-23 shooting with 11 assists. The Celtics were outrebounded 49-39, with Mitchell Robinson and Neemias Queta grabbing only seven rebounds combined.
Boston also committed 14 turnovers. Analysts Eddie House and Chris Forsberg criticized the collapse, with Forsberg noting that such failures are a recurring issue for Joe Mazzulla's team.
Boston will host the New York Knicks on Friday for their home opener.
