Brandel Chamblee argued on a recent podcast episode that Phil Mickelson could have achieved iconic status comparable to Arnold Palmer if he had avoided joining the LIV Golf circuit. Chamblee suggested that staying on the traditional tour might have secured Mickelson multiple Ryder Cup captaincies, an honorary starter role at Augusta National, and a television analyst position.
Comparing their respective resumes, Palmer accumulated sixty-two tour victories and seven majors between 1958 and 1964, while Mickelson claimed forty-five tour titles and six majors across a seventeen-year stretch ending with his historic PGA Championship win at Kiawah Island at age fifty. Their Ryder Cup participation also differs significantly, with Mickelson competing in a record twelve events and Palmer playing in six while also serving as a team captain.
