Wake Forest quarterback Gio Lopez delivered a standout performance in his second game with the Demon Deacons, throwing for 303 yards and four touchdowns in a 38-14 victory over NC State. Lopez, who transferred from North Carolina after starting 11 games last season, has already matched his entire touchdown output from his lone year with the Tar Heels in just half a season.
Meanwhile, former UNC head coach Bill Belichick secured his first win over a ranked opponent since taking the job, leading the Tar Heels to a 21-17 upset of No. 25 Pitt on Saturday.
The win marked North Carolina’s first road victory over a top-25 team since 2020 and snapped Pitt’s 5-0 start, as UNC’s defense stifled the Panthers on fourth downs to seal the game. Lopez’s rapid success at Wake Forest contrasts with his limited playing time in Chapel Hill, where he threw for 1,747 yards and 10 touchdowns in 2025 before entering the transfer portal.
The Demon Deacons, now 5-1 overall and 3-1 in the ACC, have won three consecutive games under new offensive coordinator Rob Ezell, who previously worked with Lopez at South Alabama.
