India’s selectors are reportedly considering a strategic rest for Jasprit Bumrah ahead of the upcoming ODI series against New Zealand, beginning November 4. The decision stems from a focus on preserving his fitness for the subsequent two-Test series, which starts November 19 in Wellington and is critical for India’s push to qualify for the World Test Championship final.
Bumrah, who missed the Sri Lanka Test series in August due to a knee injury sustained during the England ODIs, is expected to participate in an India A match against New Zealand on November 6 as part of his preparation for the first Test. With India needing to secure both Tests against New Zealand and all five home Tests against Australia to stand a chance in the WTC final, team management has prioritized his availability for red-ball cricket over white-ball commitments.
The move underscores the high stakes of the upcoming fixtures, where Bumrah’s leadership in the bowling attack will be pivotal. His current Test record includes 234 wickets, and his absence from the ODI squad would mark a significant shift in India’s pace strategy for the series.
