Yashasvi Jaiswal’s return to Mumbai’s Ranji Trophy campaign marks more than just a brief resurgence in domestic cricket. The 24-year-old opener, who has already established himself as a key figure in India’s Test lineup, is reportedly exploring an unconventional new role: wicketkeeping.
Images shared during Mumbai’s preparations at the Wankhede Stadium show Jaiswal practicing behind the stumps, a departure from his primary batting responsibilities. His captain, Siddhesh Lad, confirmed Jaiswal’s ambition, stating the player aims to contribute in this capacity for Mumbai or even the national team in the future.
Though Jaiswal’s primary strength remains his batting—having occasionally bowled leg-spin in his early years and logged six overs in international cricket—his willingness to expand his skill set adds another layer to his already versatile profile.
Jaiswal’s commitment to Mumbai has deepened since reversing his earlier decision to join Goa’s Ranji squad in April 2025. For now, he will feature only in the season-opener against Chandigarh before departing for New Zealand to represent India-A in three four-day matches against New Zealand’s A team.
Lad highlighted Jaiswal’s proactive approach, noting the player’s availability was confirmed before the team formally approached him. His presence, even briefly, underscores how players like Jaiswal elevate a team beyond performance, bringing experience and adaptability to the fold.
