Following a recent defeat to Southern California, Ohio State finds itself at No. 12 in the inaugural College Football Playoff rankings.
This placement leaves the two-loss squad on the outside looking in for the current 12-team bracket, marking the program's lowest committee standing since 2017. Committee chair Hunter Yurachek noted that while the group maintains respect for the Buckeyes, the team's lackluster performance against the Trojans influenced the decision.
The ranking also highlights a notable gap between Ohio State and Indiana, with the latter holding the No. 4 spot despite a head-to-head loss to the Buckeyes.
Ohio State faces a critical opportunity to improve its standing this Saturday when it hosts Oregon. Both programs are currently navigating challenges at the quarterback position, as the Buckeyes continue to play without their starter while the Ducks have struggled to meet preseason expectations.
