Coach Curt Cignetti emphasized the following requirements for a top-tier performance: play clean and avoid mistakes, and increase the output from the running back unit to maintain a ability to balance the offense.

He also expressed admiration for the top-flight defense of Michigan's unit, respect for their speed and aggressive play.
