India’s opening ODI against New Zealand in Auckland delivered a dramatic early wicket when Rohit Sharma’s lightning fielding turned Daryl Mitchell’s 28-run stand into a run-out. After Glenn Phillips gently pushed the ball toward leg-side, Sharma—standing at mid-wicket—sprinted forward and executed a sharp underarm throw to KL Rahul, who removed the stumps before Mitchell could retreat.
The dismissal marked Mitchell’s first-ever ODI run-out and ended his recent form, as he had scored four centuries and two half-centuries in his last seven innings against India. The wicket also added to Glenn Phillips’ international record, as he was involved in a run-out on 11 of his 12 prior dismissals.
Meanwhile, India’s top-order collapse continued as the Black Caps lost their first five wickets for under 100 runs, a pattern that has plagued them on home soil in recent years—seven of their last eight matches in such situations ended in defeat.
