Vunipola planned to retire before Leicester called

Veteran loosehead prop Mako Vunipola had planned to step away from rugby after finishing a two-season stint in France with Vannes, but an unexpected January outreach from Leicester Tigers boss Geoff Parling altered his trajectory. The 35-year-old front-rower, who collected four Premiership crowns and three European Champions Cup trophies during his long tenure at Saracens, opted to extend his playing days past his 36th birthday following discussions that also involved his wife.

Parling, who previously lined up alongside Vunipola for England over a decade ago and joined him on the 2013 British and Irish Lions tour of Australia, is entering his second term in charge after taking Leicester to the league semi-finals in his debut year.

Vunipola's arrival bolsters an East Midlands forward pack depleted by the exits of Welsh international Nicky Smith to Sale Sharks and South African back-rower Hanro Liebenberg to the Bulls. Tigers management intends to carefully control the veteran's workload rather than fielding him across consecutive matches without rest.

Despite returning to domestic competition in England, the 79-cap prop dismissed the notion of reviving his international career—having stepped down from national duties prior to his move abroad—insisting his sole focus remains on driving standards and performing well for Leicester.
