Saints better prepared for Prem title defence - Dowson

Director of rugby Phil Dowson believes Northampton Saints are far better equipped to protect their Premiership crown than during their previous attempt. Following a championship run in 2024, the side dropped to eighth position in 2024-2025 after prominent departures such as Courtney Lawes, Alex Waller, Lewis Ludlam, and Alex Moon, despite reaching that year's Champions Cup final against Bordeaux.

Northampton rebounded in 2025-2026 by leading the league with 14 victories in 18 fixtures before overcoming Exeter 26-17 at Allianz Stadium to secure the title in June, aiming to become the competition's first back-to-back winners since Saracens in 2019.

Ahead of the upcoming campaign, the club saw George Furbank, James Ramm, Sam Graham, Tom James, and Elliot Millar Mills depart, while adding Italian internationals Ion Neculai and Malik Faissal. Crucial continuity has been preserved through contract extensions for Tommy Freeman, Fin Smith, Fraser Dingwall, and Alex Mitchell, alongside Henry Pollock being secured through 2026-2027.

Both Dowson, working alongside sports psychologist Ollie Dixon, and scrum-half Mitchell emphasized that addressing past inconsistencies, particularly during winter away matches, has left the squad well-positioned to maintain high standards away from their Franklin's Gardens base.
