The United Nations has condemned the racist abuse directed at tennis star Coco Gauff following her victory at the China Open. During her match against Sun Xinran on October 5, Gauff faced criticism from fans after calling for a hindrance during a point, which led to online harassment including racial slurs and threats.
The UN Human Rights Office issued a statement calling the messages 'appalling' and emphasizing that Black female athletes are often targeted for such vitriol. Gauff, who defeated Xinran in straight sets (7-5, 6-1), has since withdrawn from the Wuhan Open due to fatigue, though she will compete in the Billie Jean King Cup playoff tie between Hungary and the United States.
The UN urged sports bodies and fans to reject racism and sexism in tennis, highlighting the need for collective action against online abuse.
