Bill Belichick’s North Carolina Tar Heels delivered a statement win on Saturday, defeating the No. 25 Pittsburgh Panthers 21-17 in a hard-fought ACC clash.
The victory marked UNC’s first ranked win under Belichick, who took over the program after a 4-8 debut season last year. The Tar Heels, showing marked improvement this fall, overcame a tough road game in Pittsburgh, where they capitalized on a late fourth-quarter touchdown pass from quarterback Billy Edwards Jr.
to tight end Shamar Easter to secure the lead. Edwards finished with 249 passing yards and two touchdowns, though he also threw two interceptions, while Pitt’s backup quarterback Holden Geriner struggled with 219 yards, two picks, and a 5.0 yards-per-attempt average in relief of injured starter Mason Heintschel, who remains out with an ACL tear.
Belichick, who led the New England Patriots to six Super Bowls, praised his team’s resilience, noting they ‘kept battling’ against a well-coached opponent. The win improves UNC to 3-2 on the season and 1-1 in ACC play, setting up a critical matchup against Duke next week in Durham.
