Two-time Olympian Mageean dies aged 34

The sporting world is mourning the loss of Ciara Mageean, who has passed away at 34 following a battle with stage four bowel cancer. A celebrated middle-distance runner, she reached the pinnacle of her career in 2024 by securing a 1500m gold medal at the European Championships in Rome.

Her athletic journey included representing Ireland at the 2016 and 2020 Olympic Games, alongside a silver medal performance at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham. Beyond her track achievements, she had recently married Thomas Moran in Belfast last October.

Her passing was confirmed by a family statement, noting that she died peacefully surrounded by loved ones.
