Tom Westley has relinquished his leadership role at Essex following seven years at the helm. He stepped down after a challenging 2026 campaign that concluded with a draw against Glamorgan, leaving the squad eighth in Division One just above the relegation zone.
Westley pointed to his personal output and a lack of decisive run-scoring as the motivation behind his departure, replacing Ryan ten Doeschate who previously held the position since January 2020. No replacement has been announced by the club yet.
Despite avoiding an immediate drop, Essex still face uncertainty regarding their top-flight status pending an appeal from Leicestershire over a 27-point deduction. If that penalty is successfully overturned, Leicestershire will overtake Essex in the final standings and trigger a relegation.
During his tenure, Westley captured the Bob Willis Trophy during the pandemic-disrupted 2020 summer and secured consecutive top-four finishes between 2022 and 2024 before their recent dip in form.
