The Red Sox season hinges on Sonny Gray

Following a decisive nine-run shutout defeat in the opening matchup of the American League Wild Card Series, Boston finds itself facing elimination. Historical postseason trends heavily favor the victor of the initial game, placing immense pressure on upcoming starting pitcher Sonny Gray to rescue the team's postseason campaign.

Managerial decisions for the elimination contest are further complicated by heavy bullpen usage during the previous loss and lingering health concerns across the roster. With a struggling offense and limited reliability beyond short outings from relievers like Garrett Whitlock and Aroldis Chapman, the team's survival rests squarely on Gray's shoulders.
