Atlanta Falcons quarterback Cooper Rush experienced a turbulent franchise debut during a 20-13 road defeat against the Pittsburgh Steelers at Acrisure Stadium. Pushed into the starting role roughly 48 hours before the opener due to an oblique injury sustained by Tua Tagovailoa, Rush also battled through back spasms of his own, only to suffer an opening-quarter sack by linebacker Alex Highsmith as the offense struggled to generate momentum.
Following the defeat, former Atlanta fullback Ovie Mughelli publicly criticized Rush's ability to maximize the offensive talent and suggested the quarterback move on to another club. Head coach Kevin Stefanski nevertheless stood by his offensive line and indicated that Rush might remain under center for the team's upcoming Week 2 matchup facing the Carolina Panthers.
