Following scans that identified a cervical facet joint injury in his neck, veteran batsman Steve Smith has been ruled out of the ongoing Test match in Cape Town. Medical imaging confirmed the issue relates to a joint responsible for stabilizing neck movement, resulting in discomfort and restricted motion that sidelined him from the team.
Cricket Australia officials indicated that the player will undergo a targeted program of rehabilitation and treatment with the expectation of achieving full fitness prior to the upcoming home Test matches against New Zealand. In his absence during the current fixture, teammate Cameron Green stepped into the number four batting position and contributed a fifty-two in the first innings.
