BCCI official Devajit Saikia has indicated that the Women’s Premier League may expand its roster of franchises starting next season. The decision follows a recent auction in Kochi where the current five-team structure proved insufficient to accommodate the high volume of available talent, leaving many cricketers without a spot.
Saikia noted that the board intends to hold planning sessions to address this supply-demand imbalance and improve the broader professional landscape for players, coaches, and selectors.
Highlighting the league's impact, Saikia pointed to the inclusion of 15-year-old Uma Kashvi by the Delhi Capitals as a key success for youth development. He credited the tournament for strengthening India's standing in the international game, noting its role in the national team's recent ODI World Cup title.
The 2027 edition of the competition is scheduled to run from January 14 through February 7.
