Despite accumulating nearly 600 yards of offense and bouncing back from an early ten-point deficit to defeat Missouri State 34-24 on Saturday, SMU head coach Rhett Lashlee faces notable issues prior to entering ACC competition. Quarterback Kevin Jennings orchestrated the recovery by completing 33 of 39 pass attempts for 464 yards, throwing three touchdowns, and establishing a school record with 21 consecutive completions.
Yet, the Mustangs surrendered points through early mistakes, including a fumble by Yamir Knight and an interception returned sixty yards for a score by Joel Boamah, alongside missed field goals and a failed fourth-down try. Supporting contributions came from Kendrick Raphael with 98 rushing yards and a touchdown, Knight with 164 receiving yards and a score, and Jalen Cooper with 125 receiving yards, while the defense registered seven sacks and eleven tackles for loss.
Now holding a 3-1 record, the squad prepares to host Boston College at Gerald J. Ford Stadium on October 3 for their conference home opener.
Improving execution will be essential for the Mustangs, as upcoming league opponents will punish the self-inflicted mistakes and missed scoring opportunities that marred their latest outing.
