India’s former captain Rohit Sharma has opened up about the pivotal figures who helped launch his international career, crediting former BCCI selector Dilip Vengsarkar for his 2007 ODI and T20I debut. Speaking on *The Rohit Sharma Show*, the 39-year-old batsman—now nearing retirement from Tests and T20Is—revealed Vengsarkar’s role as chairman of the selectors’ panel at the time, calling his recognition of Sharma’s talent a defining opportunity.
Sharma also acknowledged Vasoo Paranjpe, his long-time mentor and Mumbai coach, for advocating his selection in the Under-17 squad and guiding his early development. With 12,120 ODI runs across 291 matches, Sharma remains active ahead of the 2027 World Cup, while his Test career ended with 4,301 runs in 67 matches, including 12 centuries.
His final T20I chapter included captaining India to the 2024 World Cup title, where he scored an unbeaten 121 against Pakistan.
