Matt Renshaw rewrote the record books during Australia's opening fixture of their South African tour by eclipsing Virat Kohli's milestone for the highest number of runs scored alongside the lower order in a single Test innings. Walking to the crease with his side reeling at six wickets down for 124, the opening batter orchestrated a gritty recovery that propelled the total to 390 all out by contributing 174 runs exclusively with his tailenders.
His effort included an 86-run partnership alongside Pat Cummins followed by a record-setting ninth-wicket stand of 134 with Nathan Lyon. Renshaw was eventually removed by Simon Harmer for a career-high 190, marking only his second hundred in the format and his first since 2017.
When stumps were drawn on the second day, the hosts responded by reaching 27 for the loss of one wicket.
