Twenty-year-old Rafael Jodar secured his first ATP Masters 1000 final appearance by defeating fifth seed Daniil Medvedev 6-3, 6-4 in the Shanghai Masters semifinals. This victory makes him the first player born in 2006 or later to reach such a final and places him one win away from surpassing Boris Becker's record for the fastest ascent from the top 100 to the top 10.
Jodar will face fellow Spaniard Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in the championship match, who earned his spot by eliminating top seed Alexander Zverev.
The result extends Jodar's lead over Alex de Minaur in the race to qualify for the ATP Finals, where he now holds 3,159 live points compared to De Minaur's 2,880. Jodar's strong season includes quarterfinal runs in Madrid and Rome and a semifinal exit in Canada, while his opponent Davidovich Fokina is currently ranked 26th in the world.
