German tennis star Alexander Zverev fell short of a third Masters 1000 title this season after a three-set semifinal defeat to Alejandro Davidovich Fokina at the Shanghai Masters. Despite battling fatigue and a lingering ankle issue, Zverev acknowledged his strong performance in the tournament, calling it an overachievement given his recent workload.
The loss sets up an all-Spanish final, with Davidovich Fokina advancing to face Rafael Jodar after a straight-sets victory over Daniil Medvedev. Zverev, who won his first two Grand Slam titles earlier this year at Roland Garros and the US Open, now eyes the Paris Masters as his final chance to add another Masters 1000 trophy to his 2023 haul.
His doubles campaign in Shanghai, paired with veteran Marcelo Melo, also reached the quarterfinals, adding depth to his tournament run. The Paris Masters will mark Zverev’s last opportunity to secure a third Masters 1000 title before the season concludes.
