The New York Mets are reportedly eyeing Japanese infielder Teruaki Sato, who has become available for MLB teams after the Hanshin Tigers granted his request to be posted. Sato, a 27-year-old third baseman, dominated the 2026 NPB season by winning the Triple Crown with a .306 batting average, 39 home runs, 40 doubles, and 106 RBIs in 143 games.
His offensive production continued into 2025, when he hit .278 with 40 home runs and 102 RBIs while earning Central League MVP honors. If the Mets pursue Sato, he would likely shift to first base, where their current options—Jared Young and Jorge Polanco—offer limited power or injury concerns.
Bo Bichette, the team’s first baseman, holds opt-out clauses but is unlikely to leave given his projected $42 million average annual value in 2027 and 2028.
