The Pittsburgh Penguins' forward group has faced another setback this season, as veteran Bryan Rust exited Monday’s game against the Utah Mammoth in the second period due to a lower-body injury. Rust, who had returned from an upper-body issue that kept him on injured reserve for the first three games of the 2026-27 campaign, had recorded three goals in six appearances before leaving the contest.
His absence adds to a string of forward injuries plaguing the Penguins, with Justin Brazeau, Ben Kindel, and Egor Chinakhov also missing time early in the season. Beyond the NHL roster, the team has dealt with additional absences among its minor-league forwards, though Tristan Broz, Oliver Okuliar, and Melvin Fernstrom have since recovered.
Defensively, the Penguins have also been impacted, as Sam Girard was injured in Saturday’s 6-2 loss to the Vegas Golden Knights and Trevor van Riemsdyk remains out with a lower-body issue. The team’s next home game is Thursday, when they host the Florida Panthers, with no updates yet on Rust’s recovery timeline.
Meanwhile, reports suggest general manager Kyle Dubas is exploring a potential youth movement, potentially opening the door for trades involving veteran players.
