Patrick Kane cemented his legacy as one of the NHL’s all-time greats by surpassing a historic milestone in assists. The veteran Chicago Blackhawks forward recorded his 895th career assist on Thursday night, becoming the NHL’s leader among U.S.-born players and surpassing the previous record held by Hall of Famer Phil Housley.
Kane’s assist came on Connor Bedard’s first goal of the 2026-27 season, a power-play strike that opened the scoring against the Winnipeg Jets. The milestone was all the more remarkable given Kane achieved it in just 1,487 games—far fewer than the 1,487 games it took Housley to reach the same mark, underscoring Kane’s sustained excellence over his career.
Bedard’s return to the lineup marked a turning point for the Blackhawks, who had struggled through a 2-5 start to the season without their star forward. His immediate impact was evident as he contributed to a 5-3 victory over the Pittsburgh Penguins in his season debut, following a six-game absence due to offseason shoulder surgery.
The win provided a much-needed boost to a team that had been searching for stability, with Kane’s leadership and Bedard’s offensive firepower revitalizing the Blackhawks’ offense.
