Angel Reese’s dominance in the WNBA has been built on her scoring prowess, rebounding consistency, and defensive excellence—culminating in her 2026 Defensive Player of the Year award. Yet, a former LSU teammate and current Seattle Storm rookie, Flau’jae Johnson, has pinpointed a key area for Reese’s next evolution: her three-point shooting.
Johnson, who played alongside Reese during their 2023 national championship run, noted in a recent interview that Reese’s ability to stretch the floor could unlock new offensive opportunities, particularly by forcing defenses to guard her more closely and opening up driving lanes. Though Reese’s attempts from beyond the arc remain limited—averaging just 1.3 three-point shots per game under head coach Karl Smesko—her efficiency has begun to improve, with a notable 2-of-4 performance in Game 3 of the WNBA semifinals against the New York Liberty, a win that propelled the Atlanta Dream to the Finals.
Reese’s defensive impact, however, remains undisputed, as she continues to set the standard in a category once dominated by five-time MVP A’ja Wilson. Despite their estranged personal relationship—Johnson clarified last year that media and locker-room dynamics led to their falling out—they share a bond from their championship victory over Caitlin Clark’s Iowa Hawkeyes, a connection that underscores the complexity of Reese’s journey as she refines her all-around game.
