The College Football Playoff (CFP) has confirmed ongoing discussions with ESPN regarding a proposed expansion of the postseason format, signaling a major shift in college football’s future. The current 12-team structure appears headed for elimination, with plans to double the field to 24 teams as early as next season.
The move aims to address past controversies, such as Notre Dame’s exclusion from last year’s playoff despite a 10-2 record—alongside Oklahoma’s inclusion over the Fighting Irish—prompting the school to forgo bowl participation. Texas also pushed for consideration after defeating three top-10 teams, while Indiana’s undefeated season and national title run underscored the need for a broader field.
However, the expansion raises concerns about fairness, particularly for Group of Five conferences, as the SEC could secure up to nine spots in the expanded format, potentially overshadowing smaller programs.
