Iga Swiatek narrowly avoided elimination at the China Open, overcoming a significant deficit to defeat Donna Vekic. After dropping the opening set and trailing 5-2 in the second, Swiatek rallied to force and win a tiebreak before dominating the final set 6-2.
This victory keeps Swiatek, currently ranked ninth, in contention for a spot in the season-ending WTA Finals, as she sits tenth in the current points race. Vekic, the Olympic silver medalist ranked 40th, has now lost all five of her career meetings against the former world number one.
Other top seeds remaining in the Beijing draw include Coco Gauff, Elina Svitolina, Karolina Muchova, and Belinda Bencic.
