New Zealand Cricket has officially severed ties with True North Sports Ventures, pulling out of a collaborative agreement intended to establish a new American Twenty20 franchise by 2027. Leadership at NZC finalized the termination of the arrangement on October 21, 2026, roughly a year and a half after the venture was first made public in April 2025.
Chief Executive Geoff Allott explained that the organization decided to redirect its attention and financial resources toward elevating domestic athletic standards within New Zealand rather than pursuing expansion abroad. Although the partnership originally promised operational assistance and potential future investment paths into a secondary team by 2031, executives concluded that the current schedule did not suit their domestic priorities.
Despite the sudden departure, True North Sports Ventures maintains complete ownership of the franchise initiative and intends to press forward toward the 2027 debut without financial disruption. Because the governing body never committed capital funds during the association, the project remains financially stable.
Allott expressed gratitude to league organizers Sameer Mehta and Vijay Srinivasan for the opportunity to examine the overseas market and assured that dialogue between the parties would remain active.
