No. 25 Northwestern staged a thrilling comeback to defeat Michigan State in a late fourth-quarter showdown.
The Wildcats faced a fourth-and-8 on their own 28-yard line with 3:29 remaining, and a failed fake punt attempt left them scrambling in their own territory. Quarterback Aidan Chiles rallied the offense, completing 18 of 27 passes for 226 yards and adding 16 carries for 25 yards and a touchdown in what was a personal game for him after his previous tenure at Michigan State.
The Spartans’ defense forced a 37-yard field goal attempt, but Northwestern’s special teams secured the ball after a block, setting up kicker Jackson Kleather for a game-winning 34-yard field goal as time expired. The victory improves Northwestern’s record to 5-1 and 2-1 in Big Ten play, while Michigan State drops to 2-5 and has now lost five consecutive games under head coach Pat Fitzgerald, who is still searching for his first conference win in his first season at the helm.
The Wildcats will return home next week to face Rutgers, while the Spartans travel to No. 12 UCLA.
