The process to find a successor for outgoing WNBA commissioner Cathy Engelbert is officially underway, with the NBA selecting the executive recruitment agency Excel Search and Advisory for the task. The league reviewed approximately a dozen different firms before partnering with Excel, formerly known as Nolan Partners and acquired by Excel Sports Management in 2022.
Engelbert previously announced her retirement plans for the conclusion of the calendar year, having served in the role since 2019. NBA commissioner Adam Silver noted that strong initial interest from prospective applicants highlights the growing appeal of the position.
In a memo distributed to club leadership, the league emphasized its intention to collaborate with team presidents and general managers during the intake phase, while Silver and the Board of Governors retain ultimate decision-making authority.
