During the opening game of the NLDS, the New York Yankees fell 1-0 to the Tampa Bay Rays. Tampa Bay star Drew Rasmussen carried a no-hitter into the eighth frame while holding a one-run lead.
Austin Wells ended the hitless bid by hammering a baseball down the first-base line. Seeking to turn the play into a triple, Wells continued running and was tagged out at third base by several feet.
The official scoring ruled the play a double paired with an out at third. That sequence prevented Rasmussen from completing what would have been the first postseason no-no since the Houston Astros achieved a combined feat during the 2022 World Series.
Additionally, the baserunning mistake erased the Yankees' opportunity to score the tying run in a game that ultimately resulted in a victory for Tampa Bay. If he had successfully reached third, it would have marked the first major league triple for Wells since April 6, 2025.
Like many players at his position, the catcher is not recognized for exceptional speed. This incident adds to a challenging campaign at the plate, where he has recorded a .186 batting average, a .292 on-base percentage, and a .332 slugging percentage.
