The Indian Premier League has reached a significant financial milestone, with every franchise now holding a valuation exceeding $1.5 billion. Mumbai Indians currently lead the league as the most valuable entity at $2.1 billion, followed by Chennai Super Kings at $1.75 billion and Kolkata Knight Riders at $1.73 billion.
This growth marks an 1,800% increase since the league's inception in 2008, when teams were initially purchased for a combined $724 million. Recent ownership changes include a consortium involving Lakshmi Mittal and Adar Poonawalla acquiring the Rajasthan Royals for roughly $1.65 billion, while Royal Challengers Bengaluru was purchased for $1.78 billion by a group including the Aditya Birla Group and Blackstone.
The league's stability is anchored by a centralized revenue model, where BCCI broadcast rights provide each team with annual distributions between $50 million and $55 million. With an average revenue multiple of 22.9, the IPL currently commands the highest valuation ratios among major global sports leagues.
